Author photograph of the remains of a boat beside the River Torridge in Devon, near Bideford where he grew up. It has hardly changed since he walked here with his father some eighty years ago. He thinks it a fitting image for free will: ancient, persistent, stubbornly resisting decay. But it is useless and unseaworthy, and one day it will be gone.
